Federal government approves irrigation project

The federal government has approved some 753 million naira (US $6 million) for a water irrigation project in the Abeokuta and Otta areas north of the economic capital, Lagos, ‘ThisDay’ newspaper reported a minister as saying on Thursday. The minister of water resources, Muktar Shagari, who was in Abeokuta as part of a tour of all projects under his portfolio in Ogun State, said that the project aimed to provide potable water to communities in the two areas that have suffered past shortages. The main aim of his ministry in Ogun State, he added, was to develop surface and underground water resources for domestic, municipal and agricultural uses. The contract for the project will be awarded by September, ‘ThisDay’ reported.
