Defence ministry says Hema-Lendu conflict contained

Meanwhile, the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) said it had contained the Hema-Lendu clashes. “The conflict, which had led to many deaths, has been contained by the UPDF with only a few isolated incidents recurring,” the semi-official ‘New Vision’ newspaper quoted Ugandan Minister of State for Defence Steven Kavuma as saying. “Peace has returned to the Ituri province [in the Bunia region] ever since the UPDF made its presence felt there,” he added. About 40,000 people believed to have died in the conflict between the two ethnic groups since last April.
