EC pledges $2.7 million for drought programmes

In light of the effects of three years of drought in Kenya, the European Commission (EC) has decided to provide 3.1 million euros (about US $2.7 million) through its humanitarian aid office to support a range of actions for the drought-affected population. Although recent rains have eased the situation in some regions of the country, where the current period of serious drought began in 1998, but, due to regular rainfall deficits over the past decade, the northern pastoral areas of Kenya continued to face humanitarian problems, the EC stated on Tuesday.

It had, therefore, decided to make two complementary decisions which would support a range of actions targeting vulnerable people, including nutritional, health, water and sanitation programmes, animal health interventions and drought preparedness, it said. The Kenya funding pledge was part of an overall package of humanitarian aid measures worth more than 8.5 million euros ($7.3 million) that also covered Mozambique, Yemen and the Central African Republic, the EC added.
