The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) office in Freetown and Sierra Leone Web launched a new initiative on Monday to reunite hundreds of unaccompanied Sierra Leonean children with their families, the internet news service provider reported.
Sierra Leone Web said on Monday that the ICRC programme would try to help families split up by war in Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia. Sierra Leone Web will periodically publish on its front page an updated list of such families, their last known addresses as provided by the children and contact information for the ICRC offices in Sierra Leone.
An ICRC volunteer in Freetown told IRIN on Wednesday that lists of the separated families, broadcast on local radio, had registered some success. “We have reunited over 40 children with their families since the beginning of the year,” Abubakr Gamanga, ICRC Freetown’s information and dissemination officer, said.
