Private maize trade to be banned

The state-controlled Herald newspaper has reported that the government is to ban private trade in maize. It said the government was drafting a law that would make the state-controlled Grain Marketing Board the sole buyer and seller of the country’s staple food. The Zimbabwean Commercial Farmers Union described the proposed measure as yet another disaster for the farming sector. Analysts were quoted saying that Zimbabwe faced food shortages after a huge fall in production on farms invaded by government supporters in the past year.
