Arusha signatories to meet Mandela next week

The 19 signatory parties to Burundi’s peace agreement are to meet mediator Nelson Mandela in South Africa on 10 July, just after an OAU summit in Lusaka and just ahead of a regional summit for Burundi in Arusha, the Hirondelle news agency reported on Monday. Mandela’s representative Judge Mark Bomani of Tanzania told Hirondelle that the South Africa meeting would last two days and would concentrate on the issue of Burundi’s transitional leadership.

Bomani said Mandela would hold informal talks with OAU heads of state in Lusaka on the Burundi peace process and the transitional leadership issue.

The last regional summit on Burundi in February recommended that the three-year transition be split into two 18-month periods, the first to be led by a Tutsi president and Hutu vice-president, and then vice-versa.
Observers believe Mandela may make a public announcement on the leadership issue at the 23 July regional summit in Arusha, Hirondelle stated.
