Next month’s Organisation of African Unity (OAU) summit in the Zambian capital of Lusaka will focus on the continent’s economic challenges, Channel Africa reported on Thursday, quoting a Zambian official. “This summit will not strive to settle wars of liberation” but would herald a “new era where economic problems will be taken up,” Sikota Wina, an emissary of Zambian President President Frederick Chiluba, told journalists. Wina, on a trip to Burkina Faso, stressed it was necessary for all heads of state to attend “to collectively tackle the economic challenges.” Zambia will host the 37th OAU summit, scheduled for July 9 to 11. Among other issues, it is expected to take up the OAU’s transition to the African Union, a body which officially came into being on 26 May.
