Asylum seekers cross the border

Six more Ethiopians crossed into Kenya seeking political asylum, the Kenyan ‘Daily Nation’ said on Thursday. The six were named as Kebede Beyera Biftu, Wondigagneh Habtamu, Zewde Legese - students; Corporal Behylu Abebe of the Blatei military training centre; Gadisia Mergsa, an electric light and power authority employee, and Jemal Chakiso, an administration worker.

These latest crossings follow the defection last week of seven Ethiopian soldiers, who have been granted political asylum, and the arrival of 36 students on 9 June. The new group surrendered at the police station in Moyale, northern Kenya, and brings to 49 the number of confirmed cases of Ethiopians who fled to Kenya since student protests and riots in April.
