Government welcomes jailing of neo-Nazis

Mozambique on Thursday welcomed the jailing of three German skinheads for murdering a Mozambican national in a racist attack in June, saying it was satisfied with the sentences.

Foreign Minister Leonardo Simao was quoted in news reports as saying that the Mozambican government had been following the case closely, keeping in close contact with German authorities whom he thanked for their speedy and decisive handling of the issue. “The judicial authorities made a very good reading of the mood of the entire world concerning the matter. The world is totally against xenophobia and racism,” Simao said.

A court in eastern Germany on Wednesday sentenced 24-year-old Enrico Hiltricht to life and Frank Mietbauer and Christian Richter, both 16, to nine-year juvenile terms for their 11 June attack on Alberto Adriano as he walked home in the eastern town of Dessau. The three admitted to having beaten and kicked Adriano senseless but said they were drunk at the time and did not mean to kill him.
