Over 100 Congolese expelled

The Burundi authorities on Friday expelled some 105 “illegal Congolese residents, including 59 fishermen” from the town of Rumonge on Lake Tanganyika, the Agence burundaise de presse (ABP) reported. The Congolese, originating from Uvira in eastern DRC, were transported to Gatumba on the border with the DRC. The police and local government authorities in Rumonge found the Congolese nationals without any residence visas “during a verification operation” .”Some of them did not even have Congolese consular cards nor Congolese citizen cards, and were not registered at local government departments,” ABP added. One Congolese was quoted as saying the authorities suspected the fishermen of collaborating with rebels and bringing them across from the DRC by boat.
