The UN Security Council mission wound up its visit to the region at the weekend, after talks in Kampala on the last leg of the trip. The leader of the mission, French ambassador Jean-David Levitte, is due to provide a closed-door briefing to the Council on the eight-country tour on Tuesday. While in Uganda, the 11 ambassadors met Jean-Pierre Bemba, leader of the rebel Front de liberation du Congo (FLC) for talks on the disengagement of his forces from positions in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). He had previously refused to withdraw, but told the mission he would start pulling back from 1 June. The ambassadors also met Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni who reiterated he would withdraw most of his forces from the DRC. During its visit from 16-25 May, the mission visited South Africa, the DRC, Zambia, Tanzania, Rwanda, Angola, Burundi and Uganda.
