The government of Tanzania has drawn up a new media policy to pave the way for the establishment of more media which would be independent and accountable to society, state radio reported on Saturday. The Department of News and Information announced the plan at a meeting of stakeholders in the capital, Dar Es Salaam, saying that it was aimed at contributing to a mature democracy and good governance, and reinforcing freedom and human rights, the report added. It was intended to encourage the establishment of media houses in rural areas in order to tackle disparities in the current availability of information, Radio Tanzania reported. Under the new policy, radio and television stations would be allowed to broadcast countrywide “if their transmitters have the capacity to do so, and if the welfare of the masses will be promoted and perpetuated by a given media house,” it added.
