Police hunt for opposition leader

The leader of the Malawi opposition National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and former cabinet minister, Brown Mpinganjira, on Saturday claimed the police were instructed to arrest him on treason charges, DPA reported on Monday. “I have been tipped off by police officers that senior politicians from the ruling United Democratic Front (UDF) have instructed the police to arrest me,” he was quoted as saying.

The report said the police search for Mpinganjira came after President Bakili Muluzi reportedly ordered the police to arrest opposition leaders who allegedly planned to impeach him. Director of public prosecutions, Fahard Assani, told DPA that politicians “uttering seditious” statements would from now on be charge with treason.

Muluzi is currently under pressure from the opposition, religious leaders and the civil society to publicly say whether he will seek a third term of office or not.
