Council delegation meets Mandela

    NAIROBI

    The 12-member delegation of the UN Security Council currently touring the region on Thursday met the mediator of the Burundi peace process, Nelson Mandela, according to a UN report. Speaking after the meeting, the former South African president said he was “optimistic, as always, that we are going to have a humanitarian breakthrough in Burundi”. The head of the UN mission, Ambassador Jean David Levitte of France, said that with reference to Burundi the Council mission “will exert the strongest pressure on the leaders of the two main armed groups, so that they choose peace and not resume fighting and war”. “There is no military solution in the country. Only discussion can bring peace,” he said.
