An Australian mining company has temporarily suspended its nickel extraction project in Rutana province of southeastern Burundi due to insecurity in the region, the Agence burundaise de presse (ABP) reported. Mathias Sebahene, the director general of geology and mines for Andover Resources, told ABP that work accomplished thus far included computer analysis of mineral deposits, selection of areas for installation of drilling equipment, transport modalities, power supply needs, and the choice of the Nyakijandi river for water supply. In February 1999, Andover Resources signed an agreement with the government of Burundi to exploit nickel in Musongati, but was unable to begin work until April 2000 due to insecurity in the region, according to the report.
