Attacks by “criminal gangs” on last Friday in Butaganzwa commune, Ruyigi province in eastern Burundi caused the displacement of the population of Rugongo and Biyorwa zones, the Agence burundaise de presse (ABP) reported on Wednesday. It quoted administrative sources as saying that some 300 households and their livestock took refuge either at the provincial headquarters or in other border areas. Humanitarian sources contacted by IRIN on Thursday said they had heard reports that at least 200 people had been displaced following fighting in Ruyigi late last week.
