UN Secretary General Kofi Annan on Thursday said he was “relieved” the coup failed. “As you know, president [Nelson] Mandela has been working with the parties in order to resolve the conflict in Burundi,” he told reporters at UN headquarters in New York. “A peace agreement has been signed, although some of the rebels have not signed it and are still engaged in armed conflict...I think this coup, if it had succeeded, would have complicated the situation further.” Annan stressed however that the coup attempt “underscores the work we have to do to try and calm the situation in Burundi”.
