Government statement condemns coup plotters

A government statement on Thursday, issued after a National Security Council meeting, condemned those who sought to “challenge the achievements of the peace process”. The statement, read out over Burundi radio by First Vice-President Frederic Bamvuginyumvira, also announced the establishment of a commission of enquiry into the failed coup. The statement accused the 30 junior officers of “broadcasting a peculiar and destabilising message” aimed at overthrowing the state institutions. “Immediately afterwards, the high command of the national army took appropriate measures to neutralise the mutineers. As a result, the mutineers surrendered without bloodshed or material damage.”

“This attempted use of force came at a time when the government, with the assistance of the international community, is involved in all-inclusive negotiations, with the rebels in particular, and for a definite ceasefire,” the statement said. “The Burundi government categorically condemns and warns all those who attempt to challenge the achievements of the peace process.”

The statement hailed the “professionalism and patriotic spirit” of the security forces in putting down the coup. “We reaffirm that negotiation is the only way to genuine peace, and to allow Burundians to establish consensual and acceptable institutions,” it concluded.
