Civil war refugees die of hunger in Camacupa

At least 66 people have starved to death in the past week at a refugee camp in the Angolan central highlands district of Camacupa, a Bie province aid official told Lusa on Wednesday. Felix Gengua of the Technical Unit for the Coordination of Humanitarian Assistance said the Camacupa shelter centre had in the past week taken in 2,900 people suffering from advanced malnutrition and in “urgent” need of help. The war refugees were journeying over 150 km from their home district of Cuemba in search for food, Gengua said. Cuemba, in eastern Bie, according to the report, has been isolated since 1985, with road access cut due to land mines. Air links were halted last June after UNITA rebels shot down an Antonov-26 aircraft.
