The spokesman for the group of six (G-6) pro-Tutsi political parties negotiating in Arusha, Alphonse Rugambarara of the Inkinzo party, was released on bail on Wednesday, the private Burundi news agency NetPress reported. Rugambarara, whose group opposes President Buyoya and supports Colonel Epitace Bayaganakandi as the transitional president, had spent 19 days in “preventive custody” in Mpimba central prison in Bujumbura. He was arrested on 31 March and charged with “contempt of the president and distribution of subversive pamphlets”. According to the country’s new penal code, Rugambarara’s imprisonment had to either be confirmed or annulled by the judicial chambers of the Supreme Court, NetPress said. Rugambarara is not allowed to travel abroad without the permission of the magistrate hearing his case.
