CNDD-FDD leader Jean-Bosco Ndayikengurukiye, speaking before the coup ended, said Buyoya may have attempted to stage the coup himself. “Although we have to watch these things closely, nobody knows that he is not behind the coup,” he told the BBC Kirundi service on Wednesday night. He said the talks in Libreville had already “reached deadlock”. “Now we have to see if he is behind it,” Ndayikengurukiye added. “If he is not behind it, the new leaders may do better than their previous leaders.” He warned that his movement “will continue the struggle until peace and democracy are restored in Burundi”.
