The pro-government faction of the ruling UPRONA party has warned that groups of rebels from the FDD and the Forces nationales de liberation (FNL) are “continuing to spread devastation” in some provinces of the country. In a statement, received by IRIN on Monday, UPRONA said the aim of the rebel groups was to upset the Burundian peace process, and stressed that this escalation of violence was “inadmissible”. The statement, signed by UPRONA leader and government spokesman Luc Rukingama, called for a regional summit to discuss the demobilisation of the armed groups and if necessary to take appropriate measures against them, in keeping with the provisions of the Arusha accord. The government has been calling for a ceasefire in the country before beginning talks on the transitional institutions.
