WFP funding appeal - clarification

The WFP on Tuesday appealed for US $95 million to continue feeding hundreds of thousands of refugees, displaced persons and drought-affected people in the region. In IRIN’s Great Lakes Update 1,143, it was mistakenly reported that, for the next few months, WFP will need to feed 2.1 million people in Burundi on a monthly basis. IRIN is pleased to clarify that the 2.1 million people the agency will need to feed for the coming months refers to the Great Lakes region as a whole. WFP Regional Manager Burke Oberle warned on Tuesday that, unless the funding the agency requested was received “immediately” to purchase 111,800 mt of food, the result would be “widespread hunger”.

In addition to being under-resourced by 111,800 mt tons of food, at a value of US$ 95 million, the number of people WFP is required to feed has almost doubled, mainly because of severe drought in Burundi, Oberle added. [for full WFP statement, go to: href="http://www.reliefweb.int/w/rwb.nsf ]
