Protesting farm workers turned back

Riot police on Thursday stopped scores of farm workers from marching on the headquarters of the ruling ZANU-PF to protest the re-occupation of their farms by war veterans and party supporters.

News reports said the police had evicted the veterans from Stonridge and Blackfordby farms near Harare in August where they had established residential stands, but they had returned and threatened to beat up the labourers if they continued to work. “We are concerned about our future if the war veterans take over the farms. Our employers can buy houses elsewhere but where will we go with our families,” workers’ representative Aleck Masulu was quoted as saying.
