Six people have been arrested on charges of plotting a coup against Malawi’s president, news reports said on Monday. Reports said the six had been charged with treason and accused of trying to replace President Bakili Muluzi. Treason carries a death sentence in Malawi.
Milward Chikwamba, police commissioner for southern Malawi, was quoted as saying that one of the accused, Sudi Adaki Sulaimana, lead the alleged coup plot. Sulaimana was arrested in the eastern town of Zomba. The other five were arrested in Blantyre, the country’s commercial capital.
Chikwamba refused to say whether any soldiers were among the arrested. An army spokesman said he had no knowledge of the plotted coup. More arrests were expected in coming days, Chikwamba said.
