Casamance refugees to move inland soon

Over 1,000 refugees from the Casamance region of southern Senegal will soon be moving to a new camp in Bambali, The Gambia, the UNHCR told IRIN on Friday. The camp is some 20 km north of the border with Senegal. When complete, it will offer greater security and range of activities than the existing three camps on the border; Dillah Doumaye, the UNHCR Representative in Dakar, Senegal, said. It has enough surrounding land for the refugees to engage in farming. The Senegalese government and the Mouvement des forces democratiques de Casamance, a pro-independence movement fighting since 1982, signed a peace accord on 16 March in the southern Casamance town of Ziguinchor.
