President promises fuel at 40 naira

Once the oil sector is deregulated the pump price of fuel will be less than double the subsidised rate, news organisations reported President Olusegun Obasanjo as saying on Thursday.

The government has announced plans to phase out a fuel subsidy. A litre of petrol costs 22 naira (18 US cents). After deregulation petrol will not sell for more than 40 naira nationwide, ‘The Guardian’ reported him as saying. Information Minister Jerry Gana told journalists in Abuja on Thursday that no date had yet been set for the deregulation.

Nigerian trade unions under the umbrella Nigeria Labour Congress launched a week of protest rallies on Tuesday against the plan.
