Top US military official visits

    ABIDJAN

    The commander-in-chief of the US European Command, Joseph Ralston, arrived in Accra on Thursday and immediately held talks with President John Kufuor, the minister of defence and service chiefs, the Ghana News Agency reported.

    Ghana is among a handful of West African states whose troops the US has undertaken to train for UN peacekeeping duty in Sierra Leone. GNA sources could not say whether or not Ralston's daylong visit was in anyway connected with this effort.

    The US European Command is also responsible for all activities of US forces in Africa and the Middle East. Ralston, an air force general, is also the Supreme Allied Commander of NATO.
