Premier concedes defeat

    JOHANNESBURG

    An opposition alliance on the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius was set for a sweeping victory in the general election, according to early results cited in news reports. Although the final result was expected to be announced late on Tuesday, Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam conceded defeat.

    “I recognise my party’s defeat,” he told reporters as the latest tally showed his alliance was being comprehensively beaten by an opposition coalition in the race for 62 seats in parliament. “I recognise that my message has not been understood... (but) I will play my role in the opposition fully,” Reuters quoted him as saying.
