The Angolan army has repelled separate UNITA rebel attacks on Umpulo and Munhango in the central highland Bie province, a military source in the city of Kuito told Lusa on Thursday. Government forces killed three rebels during the Wednesday assault on a military unit stationed in Umpulo, about 180 km south of Kuito, and captured a number of automatic weapons, the source said. The attack on Munhango village in the eastern Cuemba district also took place on Wednesday, he added, without providing further details. Increased military activity in southern and eastern Bie has led an increasing number of displaced to seek shelter in Kuito, the provincial capital, where some 3,000 have arrived in the past two weeks. According to official estimates, the city's refugee population has swollen to about 100,000, stretching the resources of local humanitarian organisations.
