Botswana to upgrade defence equipment

The Botswana Defence Force is to spend US $77 million during the 2001/2002 fiscal year on updating its equipment, Nampa reported on Thursday. It said Minister for Presidential Affairs and Public Administration Thebe Mogami, whose portfolio includes administration of the defence force, announced the increase in parliament. In the February budget, the Botswana Defence Force (BDF) was allocated 8.8 percent or US $77 million of development spending and 8.1 percent or US $143 million of recurrent spending. "The BDF will replace assets such as aircraft, vehicles and defence equipment," Mogami was quoted as saying. He also said US $3.1 million would be spent on training Batswana aircraft engineers and technicians.
