UN Monitoring Mechanism visits

    JOHANNESBURG

    The UN team monitoring sanctions on UNITA rebels received a warm reception from the Angolan government when it arrived in Luanda on Tuesday, diplomatic sources told IRIN. Four of the five Monitoring Mechanism experts held talks with government officials, "but I don't think they found anything new," a diplomat in Luanda said.

    Ambassador Juan Larrain, the chairman of the Mechanism, and one of the experts left Angola on Thursday for Namibia. The final member of the team, Ambassador Lena Sundh is due in Luanda on Friday. The Mechanism is to provide the UN Security Council with an addendum to its December report on UNITA sanctions busting by 19 April.
