More aid need urgently

More aid is urgently needed from the donor community in the face of the growing food crisis in Burundi, WFP said in its latest emergency update. It said it was increasingly concerned about an imminent shortage in March of Corn Soya Blend (CSB) and vegetable oil, which constitute the essential food commodities used in the feeding centres. “WFP still requires US $98 million against its requested US $274 million for its Great Lakes’ regional operation, covering 1.2 million people in Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda and Tanzania until July 2001,” WFP said. “Chronic under-funding for the region has made it more difficult for WFP to rapidly respond to new and continuing needs, such as those in Burundi.”
