NGO battles AIDS

A coalition of West African NGOs, the Reseau ouest-africain des associations partenaires, says it will launch a project to provide medical care and social support to AIDS orphans and HIV-infected children, 'Le Soleil', a Dakar daily, reported on Thursday. The project, to be run from a Senegalese hospital, will also offer free psychological counseling to the children "marginalised by their family and the population", the newspaper reported the organisation's information officer as saying. The coalition also plans an information campaign to sensitise women on mother-child HIV transmission, the paper added. The coalition has affiliates in Benin, Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger and is supported by a French organisation, Secours populaire francais.
