Students and police clash

    ABIDJAN

    Some 46 university students and riot police were wounded on Thursday as they battled each other with teargas, Molotov cocktails bows and arrows, and catapults, AFP reported citing state-run radio. AFP reported that the clash occurred when police invaded the campus to enforce the government's closure of the facility.

    Higher Education Minister Amadou Lawel said four out of 25 paramilitary police wounded in the clash, were seriously hurt. Four students were also hospitalised. Closure of the university, which is in the capital city of Niamey, followed violent clashes between the two sides on Wednesday. Both incidents marked the latest wave of student protests for improved living conditions, the payment of scholarship arrears, new classrooms, and improved food and transport.
