Parliamentarians oppose oil sector deregulation

Nigeria's Senate will oppose a plan by the government to deregulate the oil sector, a senator said on Tuesday. The House of Representatives has come out against the plan as has the Nigeria Labour Congress, 'The Vanguard' daily reported.

Senator Idris Kuta said the people selling the deregulation idea to government were those who had been benefiting from the importation of fuel, and who would continue to profit if government accepted their "misadvice".

He said the government was focusing on what the nation stood to gain from the nearly US $2 billion expected from the proposed hike in fuel prices but "should think of the adverse effect the exercise will have on the people."
