Preparations for seed distribution continue

WFP has continued to prepare distribution of the Seeds Protection Rations (SPR) throughout the country, the agency said in its latest emergency update. The number of beneficiaries has increased to 737,500, following a review of the situation, it said.

The provinces of Karuzi (north-central), Kayanza (northwest), Muyinga and Kirundo (both in the north) are considered to be the "first priority", due to their precarious food security situation resulting either from insecurity or the drought that has affected the harvest for more than three consecutive years.

"The aim of this activity is to prevent the consumption as food of the seeds distributed by FAO," the report said. "WFP made all the necessary arrangements, including borrowing food in the region, to adequately meet the needs of this operation."
