Prison visits reveal deplorable conditions

The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Burundi (OHCHRB) visited various prisons and detention centres last month, namely those of the military, police and the central Mpimba prison in Bujumbura mairie. Visits were also made to the men’s prison and the prison for women and minors in Ngozi, the prison in Muramvya, the prison and detention centre in Gitega as well as in Rutana and Ruyigi. Conditions in Muramvya and Ruyigi were said to be satisfactory, while the other prisons and detention centres were found to be overcrowded, with some inmates awaiting trial for several years, and sanitary conditions reported to be deplorable.
