WFP is intending to extend a school feeding project in Burundi, which was originally launched by the UN food agency and the government in Kirundo province in November. That project is currently assisting some 10,000 children in four drought-affected communes of the province. The project will be extended to assist some 60,000 schoolchildren in Muyinga, Kirundo and Ngozi provinces. WFP pointed out that school attendance in these provinces had been significantly reduced due to hunger, but since the school-feeding project began in Kirundo a positive change in attendances had been noticed, including an increase in the number of girls attending classes.
