Niger has set up a special ad-hoc committee to prepare for its legal battle with neighbouring Benin over border islands, the Panafrican News Agency (PANA) reported on Tuesday.
Their dispute is being adjudicated by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague.
PANA reported that the special committee was divided into political and technical sub-committees with “highly qualified” people who have “in-depth knowledge” of issues concerning the 60-sq. km. Lete islands in the River Niger.
The dispute dates back to the early 1960s. It gave rise to border incidents in 1964 and 2000, after which Niger and Benin referred the matter to the ICJ, PANA reported.
