Legalising ‘garimpeiros’

    JOHANNESBURG

    A human rights project is due to start this month aimed at assisting ‘garimpeiros’ - illegal diamond miners - in Angola’s northern Lunda Sul province, the UN Office for Angola reported. The scheme, run by the NGO Fundação Madre Teresa de Calcutta, plans to work with rural communities who survive through illegal diamond digging by helping them legalise their activities and defend their rights. The project is planned to achieve the legalisation of 500 rural families in three localities of Lunda Sul province.
