Third term for Chiluba rejected

    The Lusaka Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) provincial conference has rejected calls by party members to amend both the party and country constitutions to enable President Frederick Chiluba to stand for a third term of office, Zambian news reports said on Tuesday.

    Newly elected Lusaka province chairman Boniface Kawimbe was quoted as saying that delegates had resolved to uphold the constitution which stated that anyone who had served twice as president was not qualified to contest the presidency. Reports said that Transport and Communications Minister Nkandu Luo led a group of delegates in support of a third term for Chiluba out of the conference hall when they refused to be subjected to a vote over the issue.

    Meanwhile, Reuters said on Tuesday that Zambian youths opposed to a campaign to keep Chiluba in office beyond his legal 10-year term marched in the capital, Lusaka on Tuesday urging him to respect the law.
