Russia believed that all necessary measures should be taken, not only to
isolate, but to eliminate the actions of Islamist “terrorist groups”
attacking Uzbekistan, news organisations reported on this week.
Moscow would provide the Central Asian republic with “all necessary assistance, and not only in the political sphere”, to eliminate the infiltrators, Interfax quoted Foreign Ministry chief Igor Ivanov as saying.
So far, the Uzbek leadership had asked for assistance regarding “individual types of weapons”, and it was likely a positive decision would be taken, Ivanov stated.
However, Uzbek Foreign Minister Abdulaziz Komilov, speaking in Tashkent
on Thursday, categorically denied that the country had sought any military assistance from Russia, ITAR-TASS reported. Such claims “can only be viewed as wishful thinking”, it quoted Komilov as saying.
