Muslim leader urges Uzbek talks

The leader of the Islamic Rebirth Party of Tajikistan and former United Tajikistan Opposition (UTO) leader, Sayed Nuri, has urged the Uzbek government and opposition to settle their differences through talks, Iranian radio reported on Tuesday. It quoted him as saying the Uzbek government should moderate its policy of “threats and pressure” towards the opposition, and that it should stop its military confrontation. Nuri also denied that his party was backing Uzbek opposition fighters, saying that such reports were aimed at “creating discord” between Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, and against his party, the report added.
