President under pressure from neighbours

Uzbek President Islam Karimov this week called on Central Asian countries to coordinate their activities in fighting Islamist militias targeting his country. Calling them “international terrorists”, he said Tajikistan, should not allow the “common enemy” to take shelter on Tajik soil. Karimov said fugitives from Uzbekistan had undergone training in Afghanistan and eastern Tajikistan, and were now “professional militants and terrorists” who had been attacking Uzbekistan and Krygyzstan, reportedly from bases in Tajikistan.
