Women protest against deforestation

A group of women from the Association to Combat Environmental Pollution and some members of Green Front on Monday staged a protest rally in Ramsar, Mazandaran Province, against the destruction of forests in northern areas of the country. About 80 protesters gathered in front of the city’s Aside Hotel, where the National Seminar on Management of Northern Forests and Sustainable Development was being held, to call for a reduction in the destruction of woodlands and consumption of wooden products, the ‘Tehran Times’ reported. “By gathering here, we intended to make it clear that forests belong to all the Iranians, who expect the officials to protect them against destruction,” it quoted a statement from the protesters as saying. The group said that the northern forests should be fenced and declared preservation areas so they could be better protected.
