IDP needs deepen food insecurity

Large new numbers of internally-displaced people(IDPs) were turning up in Fakhar, Keshm and Faizabad, but so far the situation seemed to be under control - with all households instructed to care for two IDP families, according to the Swedish Committee for Afghanistan, one of the biggest NGOs working in the country.
Food was definitely a serious issue, however, since eastern Takhar and Badakshan were food-importing areas during normal years, a situation much worsened by drought this year, it added. “If the Taliban continues its advance towards Badakshan, the situation among IDPs can quickly deteriorate even further,” it added.

In the northeast region, conflict-related displacement was affecting over half a million people in eight districts, and the population was now displaced into areas seriously affected by drought, WFP reported. “The capacity of host communities is very limited and if the displaced do not return to their home areas soon, large-scale intervention might be necessary,” it said.
