Zimbabwean riot police on Saturday stopped journalists from holding a protest against escalating violence which has seen a bomb attack on a popular opposition daily and assaults on media workers, news reports said on Monday.
Reports said that an estimated 250 police, some in armoured vehicles, formed a cordon around fewer than 100 journalists gathered outside the parliament building in Harare in preparation for a peaceful procession. Police told Basildon Peta, the secretary general of the Zimbabwe Union of Journalists (ZUJ), that they had been instructed to disperse the protestors and prevent the march. Police ordered the would-be protesters to disperse within five minutes or risk teargas and baton sticks.
