Muslim factions clash, 40 injured

A violent dispute between two Muslim factions in the central Cameroon city of Foumban left at least 40 people injured, AFP reported on Monday. The French news agency, quoting medical sources, said the appointment of Prince Njankouo Zouneido of the ancient Bamoun kingdom as head of the local Islamic council, pitted the Tidjanites Brotherhood against their Wahabites counterparts. The groups also disputed the appointment of a new Imam for the city’s main mosque. Security forces intervened to bring the situation under control and free a dozen Wahabites taken hostage during the fighting. The city’s mosque has also been shut and put under guard, AFP said.
