Some 4,800 Sierra Leonean refugees have returned home since the International Organization for Migration (IOM) started its sealift on 9 January, IOM said on Tuesday.
It reported that 497 returnees arrived in Freetown on Tuesday after a 14-hour journey from Conakry, the Guinean capital. A second ship, the MV Overbeck, was expected to sail later in the day.
The IOM, with cooperation from UNHCR, is repatriating 20,000 Sierra Leonean refugees who have been fleeing rebel attacks and local hostility to their presence in Guinea.
